Abel Tasman 2011 Epic Adventure

What an amazingweek. The rain poured down and the sun shined. Forty nine students enjoying theelements and the challenges of the Abel Tasman Experience. I thoroughly enjoyedthis year's adventure. The students were exceptional. My tenth and last Abel TasmanTrip with Muritai School was a beauty! Thank you everyone who came down and helped to make this year's trip a huge success.

Kids Election Day

As part of a mini inquiry into theelection, we received replicas of the ballot papers that adults will receive on the 26th of November andconducted our own election. We used a Kids Voting ballot box and Kids Votingballot papers.

Students voted forreal candidates, with real ballot papers. After the election we will comparethe results of our election with the results of the real election.

Soccer Tournament

Today four teams of year 7/8 Muritai students travelled to Petone Memorial Park to compete in the HRSA football tournament. There was a lot of determined play and skill displayed on the pitches. Muritai was able to field very competitive teams and were able to secure the needed goals to place 1st and 3rd in the girls and 3rd in both boys grades.

Wearable Arts in full swing

It is only a week and a half till our Wearable Arts shows. The outfits coming in are quite amazing, the work and effort by many students is impressive.

It is also choreographing and practicing time. I am enjoying my group ‘Space’ It has been a lot of fun so far, students have been wonderful.

Reading, Writing and Effective Feedback using an on line environment.

Students have been working on creating descriptive passages as well as giving effective feedback.

Now they will be reading the writing of their classmates and giving feedback (click on comments under each piece of writing to see comments.)

Wow - Reading, analysing, critiquing, developing an awareness of quality writing, learning new words from others, as well as developing an understanding the ‘Manakitanga’ and supporting others.

Listening to their work out loud makes them aware of errors, feedback from others gives them reassurance, and confidence. Reading the work of others gives them ideas. Feedback from the teacher gives them advice!

After a week of feedback students will print off their stories and comments.

This has been an extremely exciting process, with huge benefits to student leaning as well as have the class involved in a range of fabulous 'learning conversations'

Today we watched the short film 'The Six Dollar Fifty Man'. After watching this amazing, thought provoking film we discussed the many themes.

Maggie from School Gen

Over the last two days Maggie from School Gen has been talking to the students individually, giving in-depth professional feedback on their eco-house inquiries.

We are always looking for opportunities to take students to the next level. Maggie has provided this opportunity with the valuable discussions that she has had with individuals.

She has been amazed at the quality of inquiry, the research, the designs and the knowledge that students have gained.

Maggie selected four students that she was particularly impressed with. They included: Hazel, Jordie, Abby and Clara. These four students were given the opportunity to share their inquiries with the syndicate. Celine also got recognised for the creative approach to the way she designed her furniture.

Mask Making

We have spent the last two days making Masks, with a couple of breaks to enjoy the snow outside.

Awesome creations are being thought up, creative ideas are flowing, imaginations are being pushed to the limits and some fantastic masks are being produced as a result.

It is the Wearable Arts term and this year we have started early by creating a mask. This way students understand the concept of ‘construction’ and understand that a framework is required in order to create a visual, artistic masterpiece as apposed to just a costume.

Planning NOW means better preparation and positive results later.

Over the last couple of days we have been looking at, discussing, brainstorming, exploring and talking about influences.

Hauora

As a lead into our term three unit, this afternoon we explored the concept of Hauora

Hauora, is a philosophy of health and well-being unique to New Zealand. It deals with four aspects of the mind and body; physical, mental, social, and spiritual.
Hauora has been compared to the four walls of a whare, each wall representing a different dimension.
All four dimensions are necessary for strength and stability.

After identifying the four aspects of health and well-being and discussing examples of each. We then looked at how they all link together. Then we shared our views on the challenges, in relationship to health and well being, for students going through puberty and their teenage years.

The inquiries coming in are truly spectacular. I am so impressed and so pleased with what I am seeing, hearing and reading. The task was simple, explore eco-housing concepts and then design your own eco-house. However, students had opportunities to complete a range of extension tasks including: making a model, in-depth research, site visits, interviews with experts, power point displays and the list goes on.

Malaysian Visitors to the Senior School

This week we have been lucky to have a special visitor in Room 23, a student teacher from Malaysia. Her name is Nurhasuna Yusoff. We can call her Ati. She is currently studying at Victoria University to become an English teacher back in her home country.

Today Ati gave the class a presentation on Mayasia. She talked about different places in Malaysia, the food, clothing, traditional dance and transport. It was really interesting, there were lots of questions and we learnt a lot.

It was also wonderful hearing about Caitlyn’s culture, as she has a Malaysian background.

Otago Problem Solving.

Today was Otago Problem Solving challenge day

The Otago Problem Challenge is a mathematics problem solving competition aimed at Intermediate School children. It is organised by members of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Otago.

Children participating in the competition attempt to answer five questions in 30 minutes. The questions get harder as you go. Question 1 being the easiest and 5 the hardest.

On a cold but sunny day the Year 5 -8 Muritai School Cross Country was held at Williams Park. After weeks of practicing it was great to finally get the opportunity to compete. The standard of participation was excellent, with everyone giving it their best effort.

His talk fits nicely into our sustainable living unit. Teaching the children about sustainable practices not only means protecting the earths resources but also looking out the earths people who are unable to protect themselves.

Yum! Pumpkin Soup

It was all smiles in the Senior School last week. Students were lining up for homemade(schoolmade) pumpkin and cumin soup, made from our very own garden grown pumpkins, garlic and parsley. Ms Berry used a special recipe passed down from her great, great grandmother and seemed to be the recipe for success. One child was heard saying "it was the best soup they had tasted". Another student who has never liked soup had 3 cups. Someone whispered behind the school that "it is even better then the Deli's"! Sue and Carole in the office have requested the recipe (it must be good)

Today, our term inquiry went out. Mr Eames presented all the information to the syndicate. It is a really cool inquiry on sustainable housing.

We went through the inquiry process, discussed time management and self management. Mr Eames gave us demonstration on what the inquiry will look like and discussed a step by step approach.

Mr Eames also showed us an design example on 'Google Sketch' to give guidance on how to approach the design stage of the inquiry.

We also looked at the assessment schedule.

We try our best, aim for a suitable level and always ask for help when needed.

On Tuesday a group of Enviroschools ambassadors headed into town to view the Meridian Light house Project. They received a tour from one of the leading architects for the project. In order to do the above students have explored, brainstormed and discussed the themes within Uno’s Garden, before selecting a topic of interest. E.g. Deforestation, Endangered animals

The process we are now following is:

Formulate relevant questions to assist their inquiry
Then they will be focusing on gathering and using relevant information from a range of sources.
Then they will organise, present and communicate their findings.

All the above will be carefully scaffolded in class in order to ensure success.

Week One Explanations and Science Week

This week as part of our literacy unit on ‘Explanations’ we have been looking at Phenomenon?

What is a Phenomenon?

A fact or occurrence that can be observed
Something that is out of the ordinary and excites people’s interest and curiosity
Something perceived or experienced

An Explanation MUST involve a Phenomenon.

In order to explore Phenomenon we did a number of activities

We made bread and looked at the magic of Yeast ‘How does yeast make bread rise?’

We deconstructed a level 4 yeast explanation

We heated ice and watched as it turned from a solid to a liquid then to a gas (Exploring and discussing the states of matter) Why does it change state? How does it happen?

We looked at three on-line experiments on the 'States of matter.'

We also looked at a number of level 3 and 4 explanations and started to gain an understanding of the criteria for an effective explanation (Including one on the Violin)

Term 2 Focus - Uno’s Garden Sustainability Unit

Uno’s Garden, By Graeme Base will provide the foundation for our Term Two unit of work

Overview / Storyline

Uno arrives in the forest on a beautiful day at the very beginning of spring and is greeted by a myriad of beautiful, lush plants and the most fantastic creatures he has ever seen. He likes it so much that he decides to stay there.

Uno's decision spells doom for the plants and the creatures of the forest, including the only completely ordinary Snortlepig.

But Uno is wise and sees the future of his children and their children if someone does not act to stem the consequences of civilisation. So he starts a special garden that does not have the vegetables and flowers of other gardens, but allows his children and grandchildren to have hope for their future.

Uno's Garden is a rich story that delivers a powerful message through both its words and pictures. The diversity and detail of the illustrations tells a complex story that provides an excellent starting point for children to start considering their impact on their environment and how this can be positive.

Learning Intentions

Student will understand that:

The living world is a large and beautiful thing with diverse climates and habitats, flora and fauna.
Every living thing has a right to have its needs respected and protected.

Room 23 Achievement Term One

In Room 23 we know that we all achieve at different levels. We encourage and support everyone and celebrate our strengths. The whole class has worked really hard this term and we are achieving in a range of activities and opportunities.

It is the end of term and work is being collected for portfolios

Students are focusing on producing their best work.

I encourage students to focuses on their own level of achievement by using the terms

MUST SHOULD COULD

Students Must complete all the basic requirements of the term.

A Te Papa Report. a Christchurch earthquake report, An Uno’s Garden scientific report, an inquiry, as well as a range of other minor assignments.

Many students Should have completed the above in more detail eg. a two page scientific report, a level 4 inquiry, A more advanced Christchurch Earthquake Report.

A number a students, particularly the Year 8s Could go the extra mile. Level 4/5 written work. Extra effort on the inquiry, including use of more thinking strategies and inquiry skills. An extra term evaluation, involvement in the wiki discussion, blogged their work etc.

We also relate the above to a range of other areas. Eg. Reading, Arts etc.

We also focus on individual tasks, whereby students work towards understanding their next steps and what they should or even could aim to achieve.

Sport – Students Must be involve in school sports. A number of student should attend zone events and many could even make Interzones.

I am so pleased with the inquiries. A lot of work has gone into them. Thank you very much everyone who helped make these inquiries what they are. I have read many of the interviews and the documented discussions that students have had with parents, sibling, grandparents, friends and relatives. I am impressed with the comments made and the encouragement and the opportunities that have been given to students, helping them extend their understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi (As well as a range of other agreements)

There is nothing more powerful in education then working in partnership with your child. Showing an interest in what they are doing and supporting where necessary.

Uno’s Garden and Literacy /Scientific Reports

Our scientific reports have taken an interesting turn.

Using the amazing creatures of Graeme Base’s Uno’s Garden we are writing interesting, scientific reports on a range of wonderful animals.

Ever wanted to know more about the Snortlepig or the Frinklepod or the Grazing Gondolopes.

We started by listening and exploring the story, looking closely at the pictures. Then after choosing an animal, we created mindmaps, grouping information to make the writing of our reports easier.

We also had to do some research, finding information to support our reports by making links with other animals and their characteristics.

I am really looking forward to reading the finished reports.

Report Writing - Literacy Focus

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring ‘Reports’ as our literacy focus.

The Christchurch Earthquake has had an affect on the entire country. Our best wishes go out to the people of Christchurch.

Our first report focused in on the events that occurred on the 22^nd of February in Christchurch.

The Learning focus was: The key to a good report is the ability to be able to use relevant facts in an effective, interesting way.

We have been:

Looking at the facts.

Discussing details.
Creating the criteria for an effective report.
Sharing our work.
Listening to the writing of others in order to improve our own writing.
Looking for opportunities to extend our vocabulary choices.
Continually editing and peer assessing.
Experimenting with layout.
Continually looking at ways to improve our writing.

We are now exploring Scientific Reports

A Scientific Report is much the same as a newspaper report.

Once again …. The key to a good report is the ability to be able to use relevant facts in an interesting way and informative way.

Today we headed to Wellesley to see a performance by a talented group of performers. Their performance was based on the works of Shakespeare. However, after consultation with the audience they had to include:

Art – The Perfect Inquiry

This week we have been focusing on art as an inquiry.

Our Te Papa Tongarewa visit started the ball rolling. ‘Wow’ the artworks on display at the European Masters provided ‘exciting’ motivation for our art inquiry and the practical application that followed.

The students went on to ‘explore’ the artist and works of Philip Clairmont as a homework inquiry. We also looked carefully in class at his work titled ‘Scarred Couch’ (pictured top right)

We sketched the couch, discussed the style, looked closely at the lines, tones and textures used. We looked at the couch in Room 24 (pictured right, altered to exaggerate shadow), looked at where the light hit it, where the shadows appeared and the darkest areas.

Then the slow process of experimentation and production of our own artworks.

It took eight key lessons before we were on track to creating master pieces.

Lessons includes:

Transfer to A3, enlargement and proportions.
Shape and line work, building a foundation, a skeleton.
Creating emotion
Pastel skills, tone, blending, & technique
Light and dark.
Contrast, foreground and setting
Shadow and creation of 3D pillow effect.
Using black, shadow, definition, shape

Conflict

As part of our unit ‘Words to Live By’ and part of a school wide peer mediation programme we brainstormed the word Conflict. Before exploring techniques and strategies for conflict resolution. I was really pleased with how everyone participated and contributed to brainstorming and discussion.

Some of the discussion points that come up included:

When there is conflict something needs to change to bring a positive outcome.
Conflict occurs when there is change
Communication is the key to resolution.
Conflict is sometimes needed.
Listening plays a big part in conflict resolution

Now we will use the information as part of our studies of The Treaty of Waitangi.

First we looked at creating purposeful, relevant questions. Then created 10 questions for the purpose of inquiry. We will use these questions as a checklist whilst exploring the Treaty and the many issues and challenges surrounding it.

To get a starting point we first studied and discussed the Gavin Bishop Picture book ‘The House That Jack Built’ The ideas and observations made by the class were spectacular. The links made to The Treaty signing were achieved and we can now look closely at this important document.

We then started exploring rights, responsibility, law, communication, negotiation, contracts, agreements and more, and how they all tie together.

I have been so impressed by the class discussions, brainstorming and higher order thinking.

We also explored some scenarios such as ‘ We have a right to grow trees in our garden but does our neighbour have a right to a view’

We then discussed, ‘how would it change if you were building an extra story onto your house, that blocked your neighbours view’

Last week all the Year 8s headed down to the Abel Tasman National Park. The 6 day adventure proved, once again, to by the highlight of the year for many. It was an awesome week. Fantastic students and exceptional parent help made this years camp a huge success.

It’s amazing, only three weeks to go till the end of the year.

That means it is a very busy time.

This term we have been working hard and achieving heaps. There has been so much going on.

Where to start?

What about swimming, this term we have been heading down to the pool every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, to practice our swimming, that obviously means lots and lots of lengths, but also free swims on Fridays. It has been a great way to start the day and a lot of fun.

Lets move on to poetry, Bush, beach and shaped poetry. We have been doing so much writing/poetry this term, and it has been just fantastic, its great fun to express your thoughts and feelings and put it into writing. We have all thoroughly enjoyed it and there are some absolutely amazing poems.

Lets talk about other opportunities, like croquet. Around 12 people each Friday go and play croquet down at the club, they learn some cool skills and have some great fun.

Kapa Haka, last Tuesday the year 5 to 8 Kapa Haka group went on a bus to Maungaraki School, where we got the opportunity to perform in front of a audience of around 150 people, it was an awesome experience and everyone enjoyed it.

There has been a golf team heading out to Shandon Golf course every Tuesday.

Athletics was down at the Rec this year and was definitely the best ever.

Also on the agenda is the Year 8 trip to Abel Tasman and the year 7 E.O.T.C. week. The Year 8s have been tent pitching and meeting to discuss their big adventure. As well as formal dancing in preparation for the formal.

On Tuesday Jason from Industrial Research Ltd came in to speak to us, as part of our current unit. Jason is at the cutting edge of new research

He first gave a brief overview of insulin, what it is, why we need it and outlined why some people don’t have the gene.

Then he talked about other animal sources that people used to get insulin, about genetic engineering, putting insulin gene into bacteria to make it. He discussed gene therapy for people to add insulin gene.

Then basically showed the progression from using natural products from animals to genetic engineering bacteria to genetic engineering people.

We also got to look at bacteria under microscope, what bacteria looks like on agar and small centrifuge to spin down cells.

New – Future Problem Solving

We have been looking at future scenarios. After exploring a hypothetical future scene, we then used De Bono Thinking Hat to explore the challenges and consequences.

The first scenario focused the year 2020 and the challenges of e-commerce, whereby a large company tracks and monitors: buying, online surfing and any internet interactions.

The company can inform you of new products, automatically restock your shelves and assist you in making purchasing choices.

The next challenge is on educational challenges, ‘superschools’ and computer assisted home schooling.

It has really been a fantastic start to the term.

Introducing the topic NEW was quite exciting. Brainstorming and discussing the concept of What’s New?

We got motivation and ideas from the latest Vodafone ad and a Youtube clip on the concept phone by Nokia ‘Morph’ which uses the latest technology. The challenge for designer is how to make it real? Also what are the consequences for the future? How will this technology change the world we live in?

Life Education - From the Shadows

Today we started the LIFE Education programme. The programme we are involved in is entitled ‘From the Shadows’. This programme deals with some of the influences/pressures that young people may face. It provides students with factual information about drugs in order to enable them to be well informed when making decisions about their actions.

It was an extremely interesting and informative afternoon. We are looking forward to next weeks sessions.

Soccer Tournament and Indoor Sports

Last week we were very lucky, with two exciting sporting opportunities.
On Wednesday Sports Zone come to Muritai and ran an afternoon Soccer Tournament. It was brilliant, every student at school on Wednesday was involved. The feedback was very positive. The stars of the day were to students who gave it heaps and had a great day as a result.

Also on Friday we went to the Indoor sports Centre to play 10 different sports. Once again it was an awesome day. The energy level was intense, the enthusiasm right up there and the teamwork and effort fantastic.

Power words in Speeches.

Using TVNZ on demand we listened to the opening 30 second speeches from three of the candidates for the mayoralty race for Auckland’s super city. We had an excellent discussion about the styles (avoiding a political debate)

The three speeches were very different. However they were all:

Clear
Used powerful, positive words
Clear messages (debated)
Accents on the positive words
Short and to the point.

We then created our own 30 second speeches. (Major for Eastbourne) using the above as a criteria.

Everyone gave a 30 second speech to the class.

We then used a voki to record our messages so that we could present them on student blogs.

Reading, Writing and Effective Feedback

Students have been working on creating descriptive passages as well as giving effective feedback. (As written in previous posts)

Now they will be reading the writing of their classmates and giving feedback (click on comments under each piece of writing to see comments.)
You will notice that many of the students are writing more by commenting than when they did their original writing. Continually improving their writing.

Wow - Reading, analysing, critiquing, developing an awareness of quality writing, learning new words from others, as well as developing an understanding the ‘Power of the Word’ and supporting others.

Listening to their work out loud makes them aware of errors, feedback from others gives them reassurance, and confidence. Reading the work of others gives them ideas. Feedback from the teacher gives them advice!

After a week of feedback students will print off their stories and comments. Then move onto their next story, with new found confidence and knowledge.

Tracking changes.
Part of improving any piece of writing is adapting it to get the best effect. Changing, adapting, adding and subtracting words. Utilizing one’s full vocabulary and knowledge of language resources.
Today Mr Eames supplied us with a motivational writing task using an image on the data projector. We had 5 minutes to create a narrative paragraph, setting the scene.

We then turned on track changes to create a masterpiece of writing. Tracking changes encouraged us to make changes.

‘Influences’ – The Power of the Word

In our lives we are continually faced with positive and negative influences.

The people who influence us most are the people who will shape who we are.

How can we be successful if this is the case?

Who should we listen to, who shapes who we are? What qualities should we respect in order to make informed choices?

Through group discussion, debate and questioning students explored the concept of ‘Influence’

After feedback and sharing of thoughts, students wrote down their final comments. Showing how they have developed their own ideas and achieved the intended ‘Learning Intention’

Your parents have already been through what you are just starting to learn, about the world outside, your safety, home or school. Your parents love you so much, although you may not know or appreciate how much they love you. They might not agree with your choices and stop you from doing what you really want to do, it is only because they love and care for you so much and if you got hurt or even died, their heart would break in two and never repair.

One of the homework tasks last week was for students to list five words that they believe are powerful and important. Then write down why they believe that they are so important?

They also had to ask a range of people to select five word.

To analysis the results of all of our homework combined we created a wordle of our findings. You will see that the larger the word the more times it was chosen. This afternoon we will be discussing the results.

Lucy's Term Evaluation

Wow. Term two has gone so fast. Even though it’s nearly the beginning of term three, it feels like the middle of term one. Cross Country, Carter Observatory, portfolios, Young Leaders Day, PALs and Explanation writing are just some of the many things we have managed to cram into this term.

For our inquiry topic this term, we have been exploring the Nature of Science. As part of this we completed a science fair project. I did my science fair on Ginger Beer and ‘Can You Make Ginger Beer Better For You? I have recently found out that I got into the top twenty in the senior school. This means that next term I will be going to Victoria University for the Wellington NIWA Science Fair. I am very excited about this, and proud.

This term we have also been studying how to write a quality explanation. We have looked at nouns, verbs, technical vocabulary and punctuation. I have produced three explanations (Matariki, Ginger Beer and a made up appliance, The Celeporter) and I am proud of all of them.

Next term, I want to work on speaking with confidence as we have speeches next term. I also want to work on thinking more laterally or “outside the box” as some people might call it.

Overall, this term has been fantastic. We have been loaded with so much work and excitement that I haven’t really had time to think of anything else. If this term was great, Term three will be even better!

Ruby's Term Evaluation

WOW, what an amazing term it has been. We have managed to fit so much into 11 weeks. I have done a lot of work and I am very proud of it. This term, our main concept was Science. We had to complete a Science Fair Project. My science fair was on “Lemon power” I was very pleased with the work I did on my science fair and it was very exciting too.

This term my achievements have been numerous. I am so amazed with what I am achieving and how I am doing at school. This term we have been training for cross country, my fastest time was 9.40 I was over the moon with that score because I am not really a confident runner. We also had a visit to the Carter Observatory to learn about our solar system and other planets, it was a very fun day.

For Technicraft I am in woodwork and we have just finished making our name blocks and now working on our mug trees I am making my mug tree for my auntie I know she will be very proud of it. We have also done arts program I really enjoyed Hip Hop mainly because I do it.
I hope next term I will achieve more than term one and term two. I wonder if term three will go swimming by ( Hopefully it will!!)

Planting on the sea wall at Robinson Bay

On Friday a select group from the EnviroSchools Team, with the support of Caroline from Hutt City Council and David from Eastbourne Dunes Protection group were involved in sea wall planting at Robinson Bay. As well as weeding and a bit of a beach clean up.

Hunting for Starch in Ms Berry's Technicraft group

In Ms Berry's Technicraft science they explored the properties of starch and looked at using Iodine to find it in food and plants. Starch is the glucose molecule that plants produce when they photosynthesize. The iodine turns anything with a presence of starch in it black. We turned potato starch to gloop by adding boiling water and then we looked at how it can be runny but solid at the same time because of it's unique molecule behaviour. We experimented on various veggies, breads, sugar products and plants to see which contained the highest amount of starch. I really enjoyed using the eye droppers with the iodine it made me feel like a professional scientist!! The best bit was when Ms Berry asked us what we thought would happen if she poured Iodine onto the gloop. She did it and it went dense black like an explosion because it was completely made of pure starch!! Some of us accidentally found out our skin has starch on it..... and now we need to have a shower. Ms Berry got a sudden shock which led to her finding out the table does not have any starch in it- nor does the carpet!! All in a days science!!

On Monday the 24^th June 30 Year 7 & 8 students traveled into Wellington to take part in National Young Leaders Day.

The purpose of Young Leader Day was to:

Inspire students to make a positive contribution to their school

Promote the value of positive role models

Educate students about the need to grow in knowledge and practical skills in the area of excellence and leadership

It was a fantastic day and students were buzzing afterwards.

Carter Observatory

On Tuesday the Year 7 & 8's trekked off to boldly go where no other School has gone before......the Newly re-opened Carter Observatory. We were treated to an exciting workshop which looked in detail at the different conditions, and statistics of each of the planets in our solar system.. Did you know that Pluto is now called a dwarf planet - and there are at least 35 other dwarf planets out there which are roughly the same size as Pluto!! After the workshop we went into the planetarium, this is a high-fi digital movie theater where the ceiling is the screen and you feel as though you are flying through space! We looked at the physical stress astronauts go through when in space , and at our very own unique view of the night sky. The photos were amazing and the educators were really interesting. The kids came back buzzing with questions and debating the existence of extra-terrestrial life in the universe!

Nappies are quite incredible.
Their ability to absorb and retain moisture is very clever. Using synthetic polymers, today’s state of the art disposable diapers will absorb up to 15 times their weight in water. This phenomenal absorption capacity is due to the absorbent pad in the core of the nappy. This pad is composed of two essential elements, a hydrophilic, or water loving , polymer and a fibrous material such as wood pulp

After a bit of research on the history, technology and science as well as an explanation on what polymers are, we experimented with nappies looking closely at the chemical reactions that take place when water meets nappy.

Over the past few weeks we have been exploring effective explanations.

We have been reading explanations. *Deconstructuring explanations. Creating our own success criteria for a successful explanation. We have also looked at how to *level other explanations in order for us to gain a better understanding of what we need to do to our writing in order to ‘make it better’ We have used digistore for an animated explanation and had guided reading sessions.

We also created Venn diagrams in order to determine our next steps.

Had another great day!

An explanation of the 'States of matter' Wasn't as easy as first thought.
We not only continued to explored the language of an explanation, we started using diagrams and getting our thoughts and ideas down on paper. We also starting looking at cause and effect. (This is because....)

Students worked in group. The level of participation was exceptional, the theories were flowing.

With the help of 'Digistore' (online interactive tutorial) we come up with some superb group explanations.

I love the start of every unit of work. We call it The 'Excite' part. The Excite section of the Muritai inquiry model is about creating a sense of wondering, engaging students, finding out what they think, believe and feel and gauge student interest and attitude.

Term One is almost at an end. It has been an amazing term. We have managed to fit so much into only nine weeks. I really like being in Room 23, my classmates are fantastic and I am working really hard. I am loving 2010. I know I am going to achieve heaps. I hope the year doesn’t go to quickly.

The term has shot by, however we have packed heaps into it. I really enjoyed starting the day with a morning swim. Another highlight was our unit ‘Standing Strong’ this was an interesting unit which really made me think. We have been writing reports, creating amazing artworks, learning about numbers in maths. My blog is spectacular! I am also improving my inquiry skills. I have been using the homework wiki and discussion. Which has been a lot of fun and my inquiry is now a level 4.

I have achieved a lot this term. I am proud to be a leader of the Senior School (I am Enviroschools ambassador). I am in the Kapa Haka group. I have completed all my inquiry homework. I thought that The Shaun Tan show ‘The Arrival’ was awesome!

I managed to get into both zone and interzone swimming events. I got to listen to Derick Landy, the author of the Skull Duggery series. I have created an awesome Garage Band musical composition in arts rotation and my Lex Benson Cooper art is the best artwork I have done. My portfolio is cool, it has heap of photos. I am working really hard in class and have written some great reports. I have read 12 books this year.

Next term is the work term. I am looking forward to achieving even more than in Term One. My goals include: In writing I need to proof read all my work and add more detail. I also want to make sure I am trying new things, share my work more, join in discussions and make sure I am always organized for each day. I want to do really well in the Science Fair and in my book work. I also want to be more involved in Muritai TV and I can’t wait till we make flubber in Science (Ms Berry’s Technicraft)

Inquiry Evaluations

Today we discussed 'What makes an effective evaluation?'

The evaluation section of the inquiry is so important. It shows personal development as well as outlining a learning journey. How far have students come from the start of the unit to now. What have they found interesting? What have they found challenging? Are they pleased with their efforts?

It was a great session. We revisited the Tim Finn & Herbs Song 'Parihaka'
looking again at the Lyrics. We all agreed that we now know what the lyrics mean.

Daniel's Conclusion.

As you can see in my inquiry, Parihaka was, and still is a powerful emblem of passive resistance Many people could learn something from this historical event.

Te Whiti and Tohu stood up for the entire population of Maori in New Zealand. They took responsibility for the welfare of their people and stood up for what they believed in. Most people would have given up. They stood in front of over 1,000 gun barrels and stood strong for Their people, they refused to take arms and fight back.

Although I already knew a bit about Parihaka. I never really grasped the importance of what Parihaka symbolised and what happened during that era. Pakeha signed a promise that they didn't keep, and no one was strong enough to stand up to them until Te Whiti and Tohu came to create Parihaka, and with that they made passive resistance recognized around that world and are respected to this day.

Many of my ideas were sparked by my classmates and by Mr Eames, these ideas helped me make my inquiry to the standard it is. At the start of the inquiry unit we watched a video song about Parihaka
( http://www.filmarchive.org.nz/readytoroll/view.php?id=38 ) it didn't mean much to me, it seemed like just another song. Now when I hear it I understand its purpose. ‘To make people aware of Parihaka.’

Yesterday we looked at the brief for the Inquiry Assignment on 'Standing Strong'. As a class we focused on getting a quick title page created (Mr Eames created his in 3 minutes), and also drafting the introduction together. Below is an example of an introduction that would be a level 5. You may use this as a guide for your own introduction. But remember you must use your own words, and you can add or remove parts that don't work for you.

This term's inquiry is a challenge, however the skills the we are learning are so important. As well as a lot of reading and writing students learn to:

Create effective questions which lead to purposeful inquiry.
Source and process information in their own ideas
Produce information from a question.
Justify opinions by recalling information or making inferences
Communicate and inform

This Term’s Inquiry unit was called ‘Standing Strong’. The main idea in this unit was all about standing up for what you believe in through empathy and integrity.
Empathy means having an understanding for the ideas and feelings of other people. While integrity means sticking to your own principles and making honest choices based on what you believe.

We have talked about many different people who have had to fight to stand up for what they believed in such as Martin Luther King and Gandhi. Often standing strong can be really hard and cause many issues such as discrimination, mistreatment and often imprisonment.

As a New Zealand Example of Standing Strong we focused on the invasion and annihilation of Parihaka in 1881. The reason for using Parihaka is that it was the birthplace of ‘Passive resistance’ and the idea of non-violent protest.
This is a good example of people Standing up for themselves in the face of oppression, violence and injustice. It would have been easy for the people of Parihaka to fight the Pakeha, however they believed that acting in war would only bring more war upon the people of New Zealand. I will discuss the events at Parihaka more in section 2.

The intention of this Inquiry unit is to give us a better understanding of the importance of standing up for our beliefs and ourselves. It encourages us to consider the struggles of those who have gone before us in order to make our lives the way they are today. And helps have empathy for Maoris grievances about land confiscation and Parihakas huge loss of lives.

Shaun Tan – The Arrival.

Shaun Tan’s Picture book ‘The Arrival’ is an amazing story which is told through wonderful illustrations.

Today we explored the many images and pieced together the fascinating story.

“The Arrival” tells the story of an immigrant’s . A young father leaves his home to create a better life for his family in a distant land of opportunity. He struggles to find a job, a place to stay and a sense of meaning in his new existence. Along the way he befriends others, more established immigrants. He listens to their stories and benefits from their kindnesses. The young father reunites with his family as “The Arrival” draws to a close, and the distant land finally becomes home.

On Friday we are lucky to able to see a show of ‘The Arrival’ which is on as part of the Wellington festival of the arts.

Art as an inquiry

This week we started an art attack (an art focus, learning about, exploring and developing skills and techniques in visual arts)

We are learning about contemporary art, what it is and how it is composed. We are paying particular attention to Kiwi artist Lex Benson-Cooper. We are exploring how to use fine paint brushes to create detailed backgrounds which replicate 1950's wallpaper, before launching into our fore-ground of still life.

It is not easy and students are experimenting with a wide range of techniques and concepts.
Blending, contrast, shape, reflection, colour, light, tone and design.
The results so far are fantastic!

PAL Leadership Training

Becoming good role models, fair play and active, responsible
students. This is what the physical activity leaders (pAls) are.

Today an enthusiastic group of students explored the concepts associated with being positive leaders in physical activity.

With guidance from Georgina from Sports Wellington, students were involved in a range of activities designed to develop:
• leadership skills
• Good role modelling
• Skill needed to run physical activity sessions with younger
students

And encourage fair play and build confidence

Exploring Report Writing.

We Are Learning to: Be able to inform using relevant factual information, in a written form.

This is because: You need to be able to collect, sort, analysis and structure information correctly.

Learning Intention - Look at the Criteria of a report in detail. Gain greater understanding of structure of a Report.

Motivation: Earlier this month the rock band AC/DC hit Wellington. The reports that followed provided exciting language and captured the atmosphere of the concert.
Using these as models of effective reports we will start be analyzing the features of a report. Before writing reports on Friday’s ‘Strike’ Performance.
