Korowai / Hauora and Establishing a safe learning environment

Today students brainstormed all the ways in which the classroom could be made a more positive healthy learning environment for everyone.

Rather than focusing on rules, the emphasis was on safety and positive attitudes so that everyone feels valued and can share their ideas openly. When students finished contributing to the brainstorm, we discussed guidelines, such as respect for others, confidentiality, and the right to pass. Using the guidelines we created a Korowai interweaving the values and considerations. Like a traditional Maori cloak which provides Mana and self worth, protecting the wearer. The Korowai’s we created are like our protective cloak over the classroom making everyone feel safe and secure.

We also continue to explore the concept of ‘Hauora’ looking closely at our own health and well being.

He oranga ngākau, He pikinga waiora.

Positive feelings in your heart will raise your sense of self-worth.
